Paint Sprayers – How To Choose and Use
You know that paint sprayers can make many jobs go faster and look great, but you want to learn a little bit more about what type of paint sprayer to buy or rent. Â The first thing to do is to think about what you are going to be using the machine for.
Most people that are going to be paint spraying are probably going to be doing relatively large interior paint jobs, or painting the exterior of the house, or a fence or deck with it.
You will want to use a different paint sprayer for house painting jobs then you would for spraying a bathtub finish, cabinets, or a “craft” type project.
Most people need a paint sprayer to spray their houses or rental properties. For these applications, cheap paint sprayers are generally not recommended, but you don’t need the most expensive either.
DO NOT FALL for the $150 Wagoner Sprayer. You will get alot of splatter and issues that will end up making you lose time and get frustrated. It is better to RENT a professional sprayer for $50-$70 a day and get the job done right.
What you need is an AIRLESS PAINT SPRAYER, unless you are spraying cabinets, cars, tubs, etc. Â In those cases you will need an HVLP(High Volume, Low Pressure) sprayer. These are the sprayers that spray mists of paint in order to get a super smooth finish. They are much, much slower, and not adequate for a residential paint job like painting the house.
Make sure that you pick an airless paint sprayer that can spray 100% acrylic paint without having to be thinned. Â You generally DO NOT want to spray oil based paint. Oil based paint does not dry when it hits the air, so the wind may carry it and – you may end up painting your neighbors porsche collection…
If you spend a little time familiarizing yourself with how paint sprayers work, you will find they are generally very easy to use:
Step 1: Use masking paper and plastic to protect anything and everything you do not want to get paint on!
Step 2: Set up the sprayer. Â How to set up the sprayer:
- Moving the sprayer can be time consuming, so pick a good spot to put it so it can reach and minimize the moves.
- Five gallon buckets conveniently have a pour spout on the top of the bucket where you can place the intake tube. Â Open the paint, make sure the intake tube has a filter on the end of it(it usually looks like a little bulb that will help prevent dirt and paint chunks from going into the machine and clogging it up or ruining it).
- Usually, the sprayer is left with either water or mineral spirits in it to prevent any leftover paint that may have not been cleaned out from drying and ruining the machine. Â This needs to be cleaned out before you begin using the sprayer. You want to spray paint, not mineral spirits!
- Typically, paint sprayers have a “dial” that will switch it between “prime” and “spray”. Â Usually, the dial is pointed toward the hose that goes to the spray pump for “spraying” and it is pointed down for “prime”.
- Essentially what you need to do is “prime” the machine by getting paint into it.
- Make sure you have an empty bucket and locate the little tube coming off of the machine, this is what will cycle out whatever is in the machine and being pulled up the intake valve.
- Run the machine pulling paint into it and cycling out whatever is in it. Use the empty bucket to catch whatever is coming out. Once your machine is pulling in pure paint, and pure paint is coming out of the little tube, you are ready to switch it to “spray”.
- Turn the dial so that it points toward the hose and spray gun.
- Make sure that the TIP is not in the actual spray gun.
- We need to get whatever is in the housing out of the housing, and make sure that it is pure paint too.
- Make sure the pressure is set to low(there is another dial that will adjust the pressure). Pull the trigger of the gun and turn it on. Make sure you are pointing the gun into your empty 5 gallon bucket.
- Note: it is best to have the trigger pulled before you turn it on, because you do not want pressure to build and have it shoot high pressure paint everywhere.
- Let the machine run until your gun is spitting out pure paint.
- Now, you know that the machine has pure paint, and the hose has pure paint.
- You are ready to start painting.
- Put the tip into the end of the spray gun.
- CAUTION: This is a high pressure machine! Make sure to always wear goggles and never use a spray gun that does not have a protective unit on the end. Paint sprayers can spray paint, an often very toxic paint at high pressures. This can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS if it is injected into skin by accident!!!!!!!
- The TIP will go two ways.
- The first way – with the arrow point out – will spray paint in a fan – this is how you will paint.
- If your tip gets clogged, it can be reversed and spraying some paint through it will often clean out any clogs.
- Set the pressure so that when you spray you get a clean even paint distribution. You do not want it to spray out too fast, or have funny lines in it. Adjust it until it is just right.
You are now ready to spray and make that project a beauty – 3-4 times as fast as if you brushed and rolled….
Spray technique:
- While spraying, it is a bit of an athletic move.
- Begin moving your arm, pull the trigger, and then let go of the trigger and follow through with your arm movement. Â This way you will get even paint distribution and not heavy lines that will sag and cause problems.
- Rotate your wrist so that you always stay the same distance from the surface, at a 90 degree angle the whole time.
- Most novice sprayers will come from far away, then get really close and put too much paint, and then swivel it away – spraying everything but the wall, and getting way too much paint in one area and not enough in another!
- So practice, practice, practice!
- Use a spray shield to help you minimize overspray.
